Reef Subsea awarded subsea construction contract
Reef Subsea awarded subsea construction contract by Heerema for its just delivered new-built Polar King vessel
July 19th, 2011 - Reef Subsea AS announced today that early May, Reef Subsea’s Technocean was officially handed the Polar King, the company’s long-term chartered new-built subsea construction vessel, from GC Rieber Shipping. The vessel mobilised soon after in Stavanger for her first subsea construction contract awarded by Heerema Marine Contractors Netherlands BV.

Technocean’s contract calls for full project management and offshore operations for drill cuttings relocation services at Albuskjell* platform at the Ekofisk Area. In addition to the delivery of the Polar King, equipped with a 150 Te AHC subsea crane and new XLX/XLR workclass ROVs from Perry Slingsby, the contract also includes the deployment of specialised, high precision dredging systems from Reef’s Scanmudring, consisting of the Scanmachine 2 and the Scancrawler. Building on its expertise gained in similar operations, Scanmudring will use the MoS (excavation monitoring system) which give an accuracy of +/- 5 cm in critical environments or poor visibility.

Initial duration of the subsea removal work scope (which forms an important part of a major decommissioning project) is estimated to 90 days.

Mark Preece, Reef Subsea Chief Executive Officer, said: "We are delighted Technocean has taken delivery of the Polar King. This first contract also confirms the vessel’s good fit with the current and future market requirements. This state of the art vessel combined with Technocean’s project management capabilities and Scanmudring’s highly experienced staff and equipment form a powerful team to successfully support critical operations involved in such decommissioning projects”.
